7 Horse racing

Extending on the relationship with Champion Data, 7 Sport asked us to take over their live-render broadcast graphics for Horse Racing.

Using the pre-existing brand assets from the 7AFL package as inspiration, and in consultation with the 7 design team and 7 Horse Racing producers, we rebuilt the package from scratch.

Some new scripts were developed inside Viz Artist, including:

  • Smart Block: a rotational 3D block that can change the text contents on an animated rotation.
  • A new ticker system with tracking for updating dividends.
  • Multiple automated countdowns to upcoming races
  • Adding functionality for commentator’s tips and horse selections, with the option of adding custom branding for each host; for example, ‘Richo’s Roughies’.
  • ‘In barrier’ highlighting for the loading gates.
  • The ability to have up to 8 ‘running numbers’ during a race – where possible through Champion Data’s racing statistics collection.

Two versions of graphics were integrated into the package – ones made to work with Champion Data’s GGi and others with Vizrt’s transition logic – with seamless changes between the two platforms.

I also spent a lot of time with the lead developer of the horse racing edition of Champion Data’s GGi, who made it an exceptional platform for the graphics operators to tell the stories they wanted to go to air.
