Great Australian Spelling bee

Studio 10 was often used as a fantastic opportunity to promote other shows on the Network.

‘The Great Australian Spelling Bee’ was one such opportunity to experiment with different some Vizrt Artist techniques.

on-air spelling

The segment involved the hosts being asked to spell challenging words live on-air.

I was tasked with giving the studio graphics operator the ability to spell along with them – live updating letters on the screen – as well as the ability to reveal whether the spelling was correct, and if it was incorrect, the actual spelling of the word.

The studios at Network 10 all used mos-active rundowns in ENPS, which meant graphics needed to be compatible with Vizrt template wizard.

Template Wizard was an excellent platform to start from, as it was already a well-established base for a user interface.

I created a simple form that the graphics operator could open in Vizrt Director (the studio graphics rundown software). They could type along with the current word, which would automatically add the letter to the live-to-air lower 3rd graphic.

Once the spelling was complete, it could compare it to the word on the list, and if it was correct, would change the colour of the text to green. Otherwise, it would change the colour to red and animate to reveal the correct word.
